The epitome of Yizkor brings us to recognize and respect the sanctity of life. We are who we are because of those who brought us into this world and those who shaped our lives until this moment. As our beloved family members and friends cease to physically dwell in this world we pray:

תהי נשׁמתו צרורה בּצרור החיי t’he nishmahto tzerurah bitz’ror hachayyim In other words: May his/her soul be bound up in the bonds of life.

We have opportunities to continue the lives of those who have come before us. As we live according to their values, we give them life. When we share stories about them, they continue to be bound up in the bonds of our lives. When we strive to live in their example, their lives continue with ours. As such, our lives are better and the world becomes brighter. When we give tzedakah in their honour and memory, their souls are said to reap the merit.

With this in mind, we are in the beginning steps of creating the Yizkor memorial booklet that will be used throughout the entire year. Please click below to add tributes on behalf of your loved ones. The minimum donation is $18 per memorialized individual to be listed. Please make your submissions no later than August 10th.

As with last year, we are striving to create a book that is both personal and reflective of our community. In addition to the bios and tributes that appear each year, we are accepting short creative writing submissions from Beth Tikvah members to be included for the upcoming year’s book. Please direct all creative writing submissions and questions to Rabbi Tendler at rabbitendler@btikvah.ca no later than Tuesday, August 16th.

We would be remiss if we did not also mention that memorial yarzeit boards are available to honour your loved ones. These boards fill the main thoroughfare of the synagogue, and the memorial lights are lit with each recitation of yizkor and for each individual’s yarzeit. Contact the office to find out more.
